  • About our Film courses

Are you a natural born storyteller? Our Film courses teach the fundamentals of filmmaking, storytelling, narrative structure and interview techniques, as well as giving our students the opportunity to experiment with different camera types, scenarios, editing and post production tools. With a specific focus on contemporary filmic uses of interactive media and post production technology, you'll learn how to apply high-level cinematography and visual effects to your projects using the same equipment, contemporary software, and processes that your favourite filmmakers use.

You'll participate in creative studio lab subjects to continually build your practical experience and professional portfolio as well as interact with creatives from multiple fields; including animators, designers and programmers, to experience the collaborative intersection between film and creative media that is so prevalent in the industry today.

We'll also help you build confidence and communication skills to manage technical and professional problems through creative solutions. We show you how to present and pitch concepts to make an impact. We mentor you on how to engage a film-making crew to understand, embrace and support the vision and messages of your film work.

A $400 million funding boost has been provided by the Federal Government over the next seven years for local and international productions. With the addition of new production facilities and studio services in Australia including the new Docklands precinct in Melbourne, the new Byron Studios in the NSW Northern Rivers region, and another studio in Coffs Harbour NSW, these initiatives are expected to enhance the pipeline of international screen production activity and provide increased local job opportunities.

A range of skills are being sought across the film spectrum to cater for these opportunities including script writing, sound design, storyboarding, post production, editing, documentary making, virtual effects and more recently, the emerging capability of virtual production. With organisations like Sony Innovation Studios working on technologies that capture the real world bringing it into virtual production environments on a stage anywhere in the world, without having to travel (Pennington 2020).

Data from the Australian Government’s Job Outlook service predicts growth in the film industry, presenting multiple options for employment as film crew, camera operators, set directors, scene researchers, production planners, editors, location managers, screenwriters, lighting technicians and cinematographers.
